Pitching Machine Articles

A Coach’s View on Pitching Machines

Pitching machines are a very valuable resource to any coach. It provides a consistent pitch to the batter resulting in a sense of rhythm to their hitting approach. For example, a practice on Monday may just focus on hitting fastballs. Wednesday’s practice may consist of hitting curveballs. Friday’s may be devoted to bunting. The pitching machine is far more accurate than the human arm and never gets tired. The coaching staff can spend more of their time concentrating on the actual mechanics of the hitter verses worrying about which coach gets to throw batting practice. Let’s face it, all pitchers have an off day in locating their pitches over the plate. A pitching machine never has an off day as the majority of the pitches are near their target. REPETITION is the name of the game and a pitching machine simply provides that. The hitter will have far less excuses and/or frustrations if ninety plus percent of the pitches are in the zone. The use of a pitching machine will allow more players to rifle through the cage during precious practice time and provide added time to work on other parts of the game. Time and reps in the cage are important as well. When using a pitching machine for batting practice, two to three sessions of twelve to fifteen balls is recommended. Letting a hitter in the cage too long will equate to a tired batter which results in mechanical flaws. Baseball pitching machines can also be used in the field to consistently fire ground balls at the infielders or launching fly balls to the outfield. No more embarrassing moments for the volunteer coach as the pitching machine will take care of getting the ball to the right spot and achieve the practice objective. A heater pitching machine will create efficiency to any practice plan.
